Diagnostic field visit at Degom Rijo village, Tirbin circle, West Siang District, Arunachal Pradesh
A diagnostic field visit was conducted by Scientists Sh. Thejangulie Angami (Fruit Science) and Sh. Nirmal (Agroforestry), ICAR (RC) for NEH Region. AP Centre, Basar at Degom Rijo village, Tirbin circle, West Siang district, Arunachal Pradesh on 25th August 2016. The major crops grown by the farmers of the village are large cardamom, oranges, banana, rubber, tea and other horticultural crops. The main problem faced by the farmers were cultivation of unsuitable and non descript cultivars of large cardamom since the farmers are unaware about the suitable varieties of large cardamom to be grown, low production in oranges, drying and severe leaf shedding during winter in rubber trees and weevil infestation in banana plants. The Scientists discussed about the scientific management practices of large cardamom and highlighted on different varieties of large cardamom available which are suitable for different altitudes. Precautionary measures and scientific management of oranges were also suggested to overcome the problem of low production and quality produce in orange viz. Timely manuring and fertilizer application around the basin of the orange plant, making half moon terraces, timely spraying micronutrient (multiplex) and with plant growth regulator (Planofix) is essential to manage the fruit fall at different stages and boost the plant growth. Managing the trunk borer infested orange plant was also discussed and advised the farmers to go for pruning of diseased and unwanted branches during the month of January followed by Bordeaux paste application in the tree trunk. Further, farmers were recommended to adopt scientific nursery management on tea and rubber following proper scientific agrotechniques in the field.
